DIY Play Kitchen

PLAY KITCHEN

Y’all, I have been DIY-ing to share with you the play kitchen and market that my husband and I made from an old entertainment center and a fishing rod and reel holder!  It was a lot of hard work, but in the end, it was way cheaper than buying a play kitchen from the toy store.  Another bonus was that I was able to design it so that it would look good in my living room since we don’t have a play room or space for a kitchen in the kids’ rooms.  I could not be more in love with how it turned out!

The key to making your own play kitchen is to have a good vision to see what could-be with a little TLC.  I found the old entertainment center at our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore (my favorite place for finds like this) for just $10… but my friend still had to talk me into buying it because I couldn’t quite see the vision yet!  Buuuut… It was 50% off that day and so I had to just try and see!  I was willing to lose the $10 if I completely made it look horrible (extra storage in the carport).  The top wasn’t in the best condition, but I could find something to cover it up.

The rod and reel holder was found on a local Craig’s List – type Facebook page.  I just randomly saw it and said, “That would make a GREAT market!” (There’s that vision I was talking about).  I talked the guy down from $30 to $15!  I’d like to say I have great negotiating skills, but I think he was just ready to get rid of it.

We already had some old fence panels lying around (we had to replace a few on our fence that our dogs CHEWED through… I have a few neurotic dogs)  and bam!  Free counter top! PLAY KITCHEN1

MAKING THE SINK:

We used a stainless steel mixing bowl for the sink.  I was originally going to use a dog bowl, but they were actually more expensive than the mixing bowls at Wal-Mart… I went with the cheaper and it’s actually deeper… $8 there.  I bought the faucet at the Habitat store as well.  It was $12, which was more than I wanted to spend, but it wasn’t used like the rest of them were and had a good shape to it. ADDING EMBELLISHMENTS:

I bought knobs for the stove and handles for the front sliding doors from the clearance section at Hobby Lobby and painted the burners on (and lightly sanded the burners to make it look more rustic).

I also bought a few baskets from Joann’s Fabrics that were 60% off, plus I had a 25% off in-store coupon!  I got my tiny market basket and my large play food storage basket for $15 total. PLAY KITCHEN4

I used an old piece of scrap wood for the shelf and decorated it with things all around my house.  The shelf brackets were purchased from Hobby Lobby when they were on sale for 50% off!  The window was an old find that I’ve had for months and I had no idea what to do with it until this project came along.  I have seen similar windows like this at local antique stores and my favorite Habitat store always has these lying around too!  PLAY KITCHEN6

My 6, 4 and 1 year olds ALL love their play kitchen!  We made this a group gift because we know all of them would enjoy this.  It has been the toy that has been most played with at my house since Christmas!   PLAY KITCHEN8

Below are pictures and links to the play kitchen items we purchased!  Enjoy!

Each of the kids got to open 3 gifts as well (just like Jesus got 3 gifts from the wise men).  Lena (age 1) got pots and pans because she likes to bang Mommy’s a lot.

James (age 6) got a cash register that has a working calculator because he loves learning how to count money (we played “store” a lot even before Christmas).

Leyson (age 4) got “Peel ‘N’ Play” fruit and vegetables since he loooves to cook.

29.  Quite possibly my favorite elf idea ever from “Boudin the Elf”…

“My kiddos are secret Christmas agents! They have accepted a special mission from Boudin. He left each of them $ but they are not to keep the money for themselves, they have to come up with a way to spread God’s love. They have to think of a way to use the money to bring happiness to others. Boudin explained this mission is based on Matthew 22:36-40. The greatest two commandments.”

elf30 30.  And one last adventure from “Boudin,” one of my favorite elves…

“This morning we woke up to find Boudin with a few ingredients and directions left out for us. He said he really misses the snow and since it doesn’t snow in Louisiana like it does in the North Pole he wanted us to try and make our own snow. The kiddos all worked together to mix up the ingredients, it was a success!”

Elf on the Shelf: We’re 1/2 Way There!

Anyone else regretting pulling your elf out of the attic on December 1st this year?  I think writing this blog is definitely holding me accountable for actually moving my elf, but lemme tell ya, it’s hard work to think of new ideas at 11pm when my husband and I jump up and realize we haven’t moved “Captain.”  Kinda wish that sneaky elf actually did have magical powers so we can be lazy and say, “No, no, Captain… you need to add more marshmallows to your snow scene!” or “C’mon… couldn’t you have brought REAL snow from the North Pole? Ya gotta make them BELIEVE!”

However, adding Bible verses and a lesson behind the elf’s shenanigans has made this an amazing experience for me and the kids.  Don’t get me wrong, they don’t always sit still and listen to the Bible verse when I’m reading it, or immediately make the connection between the scene and the verse without me having to explain it 10 different ways.

But you know what?  Every day I am feeding the kids the Truth (yes, through an imaginary, magical elf, ironically)!  And they hear… oh, they hear… and they see… and when they hear and they see, they imitate.  So as annoying as this little elf has been and as my husband and I simultaneously yell, “NOT IT!” each night, every morning the kids are jumping up and down, asking me to grab my Bible so we can finish hearing our elf’s message to us.

And each morning our message begins like this… “I am holding the Bible, and these words in the Bible are the Truth, and so let’s hear about that truth…”

So I have been seeing some pretty amazing elf shenanigans on Facebook and asked you to share!  So to all of you who shared, thank you!  And here they are below, in no particular order…

halfway 1.  “Pabon” (meaning “No good” in Cajun French) grabbed Ken’s tux and asked if he could be a groomsman in big Sissy’s wedding!

2.  “Elfie” is quite the romantic, taking Barbie out on a date for some sweets… candelabra and all!

3.  “Boudin the Elf” fell off the shelf!  Get well soon, Boudin!

4.  This elf is “Happy! Happy! Happy!” QUACK!

5.  “Emma the Elf” stole Ava’s potty candy!

6.  It’ll be hard to make it back to the North Pole tonight unless “Elfie Lou Lou” finds the key real soon!

7.  A bubble bath and catching up on celebrity gossip?  Yes, please!

8.  Here’s one Elf that gets jealous of other mythical creatures… he’s donning fairy wings, a tutu, tiara and surprised a toothless Cohen with some extra money in the morning!

9.  Presenting… “Elfie Lou Lou” on the flying trapeze!

10.  “Houston, we have an Elf.”  “Eli” has just landed in Colton’s home from the North Pole!

11.  The Pre-K-2nd graders on bus #42 were amazed to find a new passenger hanging from the emergency exit!  They were even more surprised to each receive letters from Santa Clause, hand-delivered from “Snowflake the Elf!”

12.  “Elfie” and “Elfette” are quite the artists!  And what neat handwriting they have!

13.  The Little Gym of Lafayette’s “Tumblina” made her appearance by slinky jumping her way into gymnastics classes!

Pilgrim Hat Activities

I notice that “coloring pages” are still all the rage, and I actually think so much great conversation and bonding can take place coloring with your kids so I am probably in that mix. My kids and I love to color together.

But, I also like to make templates that I can use for multiple uses.

So, I made a simple but useful and free Pilgrim Hat Activity that I am posting for ALL my TMT followers.

pilgrim screen shot

You can use this to talk about who attended the First Thanksgiving.

You can use this to talk about food that we typically eat at Thanksgiving.

Or you can use this to talk about thankfulness of course!

SP painting Pilgrim's hat We decided to break out the puff paint and glitter for this one.  We ended up finger-painting the globs of puff paint.  We had fun, and we talked about the Pilgrims. I reminded him of his school’s Thanksgiving Feast and the Pilgrims costume to make an association.  At one point I had to hide the “sugar,” my one year old’s name for glitter, but other than that it was a winner!

Simple, but timely right?

Including Your Kids In Your Hobbies

My mother-in-law gave me great advice the other day… she encouraged me to look for ways to include my kids in my hobbies.

This made me ask myself the first important question … What are my hobbies?

Hmmm…(I just had to ask my sister)… lol thats sad.

I like to exercise (is that a hobby?), I like to make personalized gifts (crafting a little), I like to cook (but not bake), and the obvious… I like to work/play on the computer.

So here is a small example of how I involve my kids in  “working” on the computer…

It makes sense to include your kids in your hobbies right? It is just hard to purpose it sometimes. But, I love to go on walks with my kids, cook with my kids, and craft with my kids so I should include all of those things in our daily routine since I enjoy them so much, AND take them on adventures so they can discover their hobbies.

Can you easily think of your hobbies or do you have to remind yourself what you used to enjoy?

My mother and father-in-law did a phenominal job training my husband as a child.  He is so disciplined – he helps around the house, he is always on top of the yard work, he fixes our household glitches, but he also has hobbies that he enjoys.

I want to train my children like that…to “work” hard and to play hard!

What are your hobbies and how do you (or can you) include your children in them?

I would love some more  ideas. 🙂

P.S.  Someone tell my husband I want a learning tower for Christmas!  I can’t believe I don’t have one yet, but if I get one I can include the kids even more in the cooking – a stool isn’t cutting it!
